3-4 miles from the Hat Creek Resort is a place called the Subway Caves which is a 1300 foot lava tube that you can walk all the way through. The temps are usually 46 degrees in there no matter the time of year. You need to wear a jacket and take a flashlight, and so we bundled up and headed in. I'd say we got in about 150 feet and I totally lost it and had to get out. I was doing so good until we got in far enough that I could no longer see light from where we entered and that was it, I felt like I was in a box or something, total darkness except for our flashlight beam........So, out we went. Poor Michael, but the part I saw was really cool!!!! We decided maybe if we had more than one flashlight and bigger ones it would be better, so maybe another time. Julie
